What Does NDIS SIL Registration Actually Mean?
Registration is not just a title. It comes with real obligations a provider must meet before they can legally deliver your supports.
A registered SIL provider must:
- Meet the NDIS Practice Standards for Supported Independent Living
- Pass an independent audit by an approved quality auditor
- Ensure every support worker holds a current NDIS Worker Screening Check
- Remain accountable to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission at all times
Registration is the NDIS’s way of saying: this provider has been checked and meets national safety standards.
Why Is 1 July 2026 the Deadline?
Until now, unregistered providers could deliver SIL if participants were self-managing or plan-managing their NDIS funding.
That changes completely from 1 July 2026.
Following recommendations from the NDIS Review and the Disability Royal Commission, SIL is now classified as a high-risk support. NDIS SIL registration becomes mandatory for every provider in Australia, with no exceptions.
If your provider is not registered by that date:
- They cannot legally deliver your SIL supports
- They cannot claim NDIS funding for those supports
- You will need to be with a registered NDIS provider to continue receiving SIL
Your funding does not disappear. Your plan stays the same. Only the provider must change.
How to Check NDIS Provider Registration: 3 Simple Ways
An NDIS SIL provider registration check takes less than five minutes. Here are three ways to do it.
1. Search the NDIS Provider Register
Go to ndiscommission.gov.au and search the Provider Register by your provider’s name or ABN.
You will see:
- Their current registration status
- The supports they are registered to deliver
- Their registration expiry date
- Any suspended or revoked registrations
2. Use the NDIS Provider Finder
Visit ndis.gov.au and open the NDIS Provider Finder tool.
Search by provider name, postcode, and support type to confirm registration in your area.
3. Ask Your Provider Directly
The most direct way: ask “Is my SIL provider NDIS registered, and can I have your registration number?”
A registered provider will answer immediately and can share their certificate if asked.
If they hesitate or cannot answer clearly, take note of that.
Unregistered SIL Provider: What Happens in 2026?
If your provider is not registered by 1 July 2026, here is what changes:
- They cannot legally continue to deliver your SIL supports after that date
- They cannot receive NDIS funding for your SIL from that point forward
- You will need to transition to a registered NDIS provider to keep your supports running
Here is what does NOT change:
- Your NDIS plan stays exactly as it is
- Your SIL funding amount is not affected
- Your eligibility does not change
The NDIS Commission has signalled a transition period to avoid sudden disruptions. But that is not a reason to wait.

SIL Provider Not Registered: What to Do Right Now
Here are the steps to take, in order.
- Do the NDIS SIL provider registration check using the Provider Register or Provider Finder
- Ask your provider directly: “Are you currently registered, and where are you in the process?”
- Speak to your support coordinator as soon as possible
- If you do not have a support coordinator, contact your Local Area Coordinator (LAC)
- Start exploring registered alternatives in your area early
- Check your service agreement for any notice period before switching
Most SIL service agreements require 28 days notice to end or transfer. Starting this process three to four months before July gives you real breathing room.
Do not wait and hope it resolves itself. You have options, and using them early makes everything easier.
Can I Switch to a Registered SIL Provider Before the Deadline?
Yes. And doing it early is almost always better.
When you switch:
- Your NDIS funding follows you to the new registered NDIS provider.
- Your plan does not need to be reviewed or reapproved.
